A SANTA FE OPERA EXCLUSIVE: Dining with the Stars

On the menu are five unique dinners, each starring an international opera singer; choose whichever chef or clef you fancy! Your dinner will host up to ten people, will be designed to suit your tastes and be catered in your Santa Fe home this summer. To round out your evening, fine wines have been chosen by Southern Wine & Spirits experts Mary Ann Gutierrez and Philip de Give. Winning dinner bidders will select a mixed case of wines to complement the festivities, courtesy of The Santa Fe Opera. …Bon appétit!
Wednesday, July 11 starring soprano Amanda Echalaz and Chef Stacy Pearl of Walter Burke Catering
Ms. Echalaz makes both her US and Santa Fe Opera debut in the title role of Puccini’s Tosca. The smoldering South-African soprano has triumphed on prestigious stages, from the Berlin Staatsoper to the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, inspiring much critical acclaim. Writes The Independent, “Echalaz is now set to be the leading ‘Tosca’ of her generation. With unforced, candid tone, elegant movement and expressive face... every note and nuance is true.” Indeed her future is bright as forthcoming seasons will see debuts at the Metropolitan Opera, the Lyric Opera of Chicago, the Canadian Opera Company, Polish National Opera and l’Opéra national du Rhin, as well as returns to the Royal Opera House and La Monnaie, Brussels in roles which include Alice in Falstaff, Amelia in Un Ballo in Maschera, and the title roles of Manon Lescaut, Tosca, and Madama Butterfly.
Tuesday July 24 starring tenor William Burden and Executive Chef Alain Jorand of Adobo Catering
Former Santa Fe Opera Apprentice and current Santa Fe favorite, American tenor William Burden returns to our stage as the Shepherd in Szymanowski’s King Roger. Of his most recent appearance on the Santa Fe stage in 2008 in Billy Budd, Anthony Tommasini of the New York Times praised,
“Mr. Burden’s Vere is wise, good-hearted and tragically naïve….Subdued emotional intensity permeates every line of his singing. His English diction is a model of clarity. That he seems young to be a battleship captain lends vulnerability to his portrayal.” Appearing regularly with the major Opera Companies and Symphony Orchestras in the U.S. and Europe, this season Mr. Burden made debuts at the Canadian Opera Company as Jupiter in Handel’s Semele and with the San Francisco Symphony in performances of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9. He returned to the Seattle Opera as Orphée in Gluck’s Orphée et Euridice. He also appeared in two World Premieres: Christopher Theonidis’ Heart of a Soldier at the San Francisco Opera and Kevin Puts’ Silent Night at the Minnesota Opera. Closing his 11/12 Season, Mr. Burden’s performance in King Roger will be his fifth role for The Santa Fe Opera.
Wednesday, July 25 starring bass-baritone Luca Pisaroni and Executive Chef Mark Kiffin of The Compound Restaurant
Born in Venezuela and bred in Verdi's hometown of Busseto, Italy, bass-baritone Luca Pisaroni was last seen on the Santa Fe stage as Figaro in 2008, a role the singer has created a sensation with from Paris and Vienna to the Metropolitan Opera and Mozart’s hometown at the venerable Salzburg Festival. Establishing himself as one of the most captivating and versatile singers of his generation, he has already made this year a banner one, including his universally praised debut at the Lyric Opera of Chicago as Argante in Handel’s Rinaldo and a recital of Schubert and Liszt at Lincoln Center. This summer Season, Mr. Pisaroni will carry the title role in The Santa Fe Opera’s world premiere of the new critical edition of Rossini’s Maometto II. He will also perform in concerts with the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival in July.
Monday, July 30 starring soprano Erin Wall and Executive Chef Brett Sparman of Inn & Spa at Loretto
Canadian soprano Erin Wall returns to the Santa Fe stage in the title role in Strauss’ Arabella. Santa Fe audiences will remember her dazzling in Daphne in 2007 and, in 2010, tackling all four soprano roles in Les Contes d'Hoffmann. In February of this year Ms. Wall made her debut with the Canadian Opera Company, singing Clémence in L'amour de loin, to much critical acclaim. Opera, concerts, and recitals all figure prominently in Ms. Wall's busy calendar; from Santa Fe she will carry on to perform in Pittsburgh, San Francisco, Tornoto, Arizona, Houston, Frankfurt and Munich.
Tuesday, August 14 starring soprano Nicole Cabell and Executive Chef Patrick Kline of Hotel Santa Fe
2005 Winner of the BBC Singer of the World Competition and Decca recording artist Nicole Cabell returns to Santa Fe to sing the role of Leila in The Pearl Fishers. The American soprano’s current season showcased her command of Mozart’s music; she sang the Countess in Mozart’s Nozze di Figaro in Montreal, Pamina in Die Zauberflöte at the Lyric Opera of Chicago and Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni in Tokyo. On the concert platform this Season, Ms. Cabell’s voice soared in London, Chicago, Cincinnati, Toronto, Atlanta, San Diego and St Petersburg. Her future engagements include a debut with the San Francisco Opera. Ms. Cabell last appeared on the Santa Fe stage in 2007 as Mimì in La bohème.
