APPRENTICES TO PRESENT FREE CONCERTS IN ALBUQUERQUE AND SANTA FE
Each summer audiences in Albuquerque and Santa Fe eagerly anticipate the free concerts presented by the young singers who are members of The Santa Fe Opera’s acclaimed Apprentice Program. The popular concerts which feature arias, duets, and ensembles from opera and classical works are a wonderful way for the public to hear the stars of the future.
The Albuquerque concert will take place at Faith Lutheran Church, 10,000 Spain NE (between Eubank and Morris). It is scheduled for Sunday, July 25 at 3:00 p.m. In Santa Fe, the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis will be the venue for the concert on Thursday, July 29 at 11:30 a.m. Both are free and everyone is welcome. Seating begins one-half hour before each performance and is on a first come first served basis.
The Apprentice Singer Program, considered one of the finest in the nation, draws young singers from all over the world. The apprentices make up the chorus for each of the five operas, appear in supporting roles, and serve as covers for principal roles. There were a record 1,498 applicants for this year’s program and 38 singers were selected. They hail from Spain, Venezuela, and a cross-section of the United States. Additionally there are five former apprentices in principal and featured roles in the five main stage productions of the 2010 season.
The concerts are funded in part by the City of Santa Fe Arts Commission and the 1% Lodgers’ Tax.
