"Santa Fe's objectives are distinctly American, and by making opera more compelling and more relevant, it has changed the map of musical America..."

    2014 Spring Tour

    2014-04-02

    SPRING TOUR BEGINS APRIL 11

Once again The Santa Fe Opera’s troop of apprentices, music director Kirt Pavitt, and tour manager Melissa Sardella will pack the opera van and head south. The Spring Tour, the Opera’s annual adventure into the New Mexico landscape, offers a taste of opera to cities as far south as Las Cruces and as far north as Farmington. In-school performances present an original piece written especially for the tour. Called True North, it is the story of two young couples who have appeared on previous tours together and meet by coincidence in an airport. They become reacquainted and share the stories of their lives. The production incorporates music from opera, musical theater, and popular culture. The story was written by Kathleen Clawson and Andrea Fellows Walters with original music by Frederick Frahm. The singers, all former apprentices, are sopranos Abigail Mitchell and Rachel Hall, tenor Joshua Dennis, and baritone Andrew Lovato. Free evening concerts include a performance of True North and a selection of songs and arias.

The Spring Opera Tour has been going on for more than twenty years, performing in cities and towns in New Mexico (and Lubbock and El Paso) for students and families who may not have an opportunity to travel to Santa Fe. The tour’s appearance is an eagerly anticipated event in communities who vie to be included in the trip’s itinerary.

The Tour is supported by the Guilds of The Santa Fe Opera, Inc.; New Mexico Arts, a division of the Department of Cultural Affairs; the City of Santa Fe Arts Commission and the 1% Lodgers’ Tax; and the National Endowment for the Arts: Art Works.
