General description:

To provide skilled workmanship for the construction of scenic and stage elements for the productions and related events as well as help maintain the Scene Shop and related spaces in a safe, orderly and efficient manner 


RESPONSIBILITIES

•Perform scenic construction duties as assigned by the Master Carpenter, TD, or other supervisor. Construct new scenery or refit stock scenery for each production and assist in ensuring the safe and timely completion of all scenery.
•Assist in maintaining a safe, clean work place in all production areas, including the stage, back deck, and basement. Perform regular inspections of tools, machinery, stage and facilities. Notify Master Carpenter, TD, and/or appropriate supervisor of any problems discovered.
•Perform regular check of inventory and supplies and report any supply shortages to the Master Carpenter.
•Fit scenery to stage making sure that everything is positively registered and labeled and ready to be turned over to the Stage Operations Supervisor for rep.
•Assist in adapting and maintaining scenery as needs arise during rehearsal and run.
•Assist in maintaining storage areas and their contents.
•Construction of special projects within the company.
•Provide support for special events as directed.


OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES

•Accept responsibility for other appropriate projects relating to The Santa Fe Opera.
•Give support and show appreciation to The Board of Directors, Guild, Patrons and other volunteer organizations and supporters of The Santa Fe Opera.
•Follow procedures and policies of The Santa Fe Opera as in the employee manual.
•Help to maintain a secure facility year round.
•Other duties as assigned.


SKILLS AND TRAINING

•Must have BA in Theatre Production or comparable professional experience with training in theatre production including set and property construction and rigging.
•Training and understanding of safe practices for the theatre environment including an understanding of the safe and healthful use and disposal of chemicals and other potentially hazardous materials.
•Must be able to build competently from Designer Plates, Shop Drawings, or verbal instruction.
•Working knowledge of a variety on construction methods, materials, and techniques including wood, metal, fabric, and plastics.
•Comprehensive training in the safe operation of stationary and portable power tools, hand tools, stage rigging, and equipment.
•Must have a valid driver’s license.
•Willingness and ability to work within a rigorous time schedule with a variety of personalities and skill levels.


POSSIBLE EQUIPMENT

• The employee must be prepared to use the following equipment: table saw, band saw, metal chop saw, power miter box saw, MIG welder, arc welder, drill press, hand held drill/screwgun, skill saw, pneumatic staplers and nailers, personnel lifts, right angle grinder, bench grinder, stationary sander, belt sander, router, power planer, chain hoists, computer.


ENVIRONMENT

The Santa Fe Opera is at an altitude of 7000 feet. The environment of the work place includes indoor conditions that may be dusty or smoky. The presence of particles or fumes and the use of materials that produce particles and fumes may require the use of dust masks or respirator. Outdoor conditions include wide temperature variations, exposure to sun, rain, wind and other weather conditions.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

•Must be able to use a respirator in accordance with OSHA’s Respiratory Protection Standard.
•Must be able to carry 85 pounds.
•Must be able to climb and work from ladders.
•Must have the vision and dexterity to safely operate stationary and portable power tools, hand tools, stage rigging, and equipment.
