Opera Storytellers Summer Camp

Santa Fe, NM – This summer Santa Fe Opera presents Opera Storytellers Camp, its third annual summer camp for children entering third through eigth grade. Campers will delve into all aspects of creating an opera, including writing, composing, designing, and performing. They will activate their voices, bodies, and imaginations, expanding their individual potential through creative exploration. A typical day includes a set design session, libretto writing, creating character maps with costumes, and composing.

The camp is taught by Becca Holmes, an Albuquerque-based theater director and teaching artist. Currently Ms. Holmes is a member of the Performing Arts faculty at Albuquerque Academy, and the production stage manager for TEDXABQ. Formerly, Ms. Holmes served as the Co-Manager of Active Learning through Opera (ALTO) at Santa Fe Opera. She earned her B.F.A. at UNM and studied at San Francisco’s American Conservatory Theatre. As Associate Artistic Director of The Empty Space Theatre in Seattle, she founded Late Night at the Palace, a live performance series dedicated to producing original short plays and experimental theatre. She later went on to work for Fairfax County Public Schools, where she served as a member of the John F. Kennedy Center Partners in Education Training program. Ms. Holmes participated in the “Write an Opera” training program for teachers at London’s Royal Opera House, and has facilitated the production of over forty student written and composed operas.

From a parent of two former camp attendees: “I wanted to thank you two for once again organizing a truly phenomenal summer camp. Over the past two years my kids, Lucas and Kira Blakeslee, have learned so much in your camp and enjoyed it tremendously. Not only has it been a great opportunity for them to learn about opera but it has also been a valuable chance for them to become more comfortable in front of a crowd and with the whole idea of performing. I am so grateful to you for keeping this camp going. Lucas and Kira, as well as many others, would like to continue attending what they unanimously consider to be the best camp in town.”

Registration is now open for Opera Storytellers Camp. A form is available online at
