Opera for All Ages (OAA) is a consortium of opera companies which will undertake a juried invitational opera competition to co-commission and co-produce new American operatic works, with artistic integrity and depth of story, appropriate to audiences of all ages.
The OAA Consortium will be accepting proposals for developing new operatic works that feature a variety of elements with the intent to perform them in smaller venues by the companies participating in the consortium.
Importance of the Initiative
Multiple studies have repeatedly shown that early exposure to an art form increases the likelihood of continued participation later in life. Nearly every opera company in America has made efforts to build audiences for opera by mounting family-friendly fare. A longstanding challenge of introducing younger audiences – particularly families and children – to opera is that the vast majority of the standard repertory is filled with content that may be deemed inappropriate to this demographic.
Additionally, in light of modern society’s increasing struggle with diminishing attention spans, most standard operatic works are simply too long to sustain the interest of audience members who might be new to the art form, let alone young children.
We invite you to join us creating works to expand the existing canon of operatic works that resonate with rich storytelling and the same artistic integrity that we bring to our stages, for presentation to an audience that includes children and families.

The Santa Fe Opera is proud to play a major role in the commissioning and producing of new American opera. Our company has produced 14 world premieres, in addition to over 40 American premieres.
