Santa Fe, NM The Santa Fe Opera’s 2019 Season poster was unveiled today by General Director Robert K. Meya. The 63rd Festival Season poster features The Beyond, a minimalist landscape oil painting by renowned artist and long-time New Mexico resident Georgia O’Keeffe.

A collaboration between the Santa Fe Opera and the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, it is one in a series of community alliance efforts between the opera and its sister arts organizations. This season’s poster will be the first-ever to showcase artwork by O’Keeffe, whose work has become synonymous with New Mexico for its distinctive modernist style and attention to the light and landscape that inspired her.

Bringing the collaboration full circle will be the Santa Fe Opera debut of soprano superstar Renée Fleming singing Letters from Georgia with the Santa Fe Opera Orchestra under the baton of the opera’s Music Director Harry Bicket on August 10, 2019. Letters from Georgia, a song cycle by American composer Kevin Puts and written specifically with Ms. Fleming’s voice in mind, is sourced from letters written by Georgia O’Keeffe across the span of her life. The piece was commissioned by the Eastman Philharmonia and received its 2016 world premiere in Rochester, NY. Fittingly, among O’Keeffe’s words is the following observation, “Singing has always seemed to me the most perfect means of expression. It is so spontaneous. …Since I cannot sing, I paint.”

Notes Ms. Fleming, “Georgia O’Keeffe was an original thinker and groundbreaking artist forging her own path at a time when women weren’t given that opportunity. It will be a powerful experience to sing her own words in the landscape that she loved.”

The 2019 Season poster will be available in two sizes, with sales beginning in mid-May at The Opera Shop.
