Santa Fe, NM – In 2027, the Santa Fe Opera celebrates its 70th Season with a lineup of classic, lesser-performed and new works, new leadership appointments, and a trio of American premieres in 2026, 2027 and 2028. The 2027 Season offers 38 performances, including an American premiere, two new productions, a beloved revival and a new-to-SFO production. Running July 2 through August 28, the season examines the many dimensions of power — sovereign, social, romantic and political — as expressed through mythic spectacle, comic subversion, psychological intimacy and historical reckoning.
The 70th Season opens on July 2 with Puccini’s Turandot, returning to Santa Fe by overwhelming audience demand for the first time since 2005. This new-to-Santa-Fe staging is adapted from a highly acclaimed production that originated in Bari, Italy, directed by Paul Curran. Rossini’s beloved comedy The Barber of Seville, a revival of the company’s lauded 2022 production directed by Stephen Barlow, follows on July 3. At the center of the season is a new production of Mozart’s Così fan tutte, opening July 17 and directed by Amy Lane in her company debut. Janáček’s powerful drama Kátya Kabanová arrives on July 24, directed by David Pountney with SFO Music Director Harry Bicket at the podium. The season culminates in the American premiere of Of One Blood on July 31, an international co-commission and co-production with the Bavarian State Opera, with music by Australian composer Brett Dean and a libretto by Heather Betts. The 2027 Season will also feature two Apprentice Programs mainstage presentations: a staged evening of Apprentice Scenes on August 15, with production elements conceived and executed by the company’s Technical Apprentices, followed by a Gala Concert featuring the Apprentice Singers and the Santa Fe Opera Orchestra conducted by Erina Yashima on August 22.
Says General Director Robert K. Meya, “Each of these works is a masterpiece in its own right. Together, they form one of the most compelling seasons we have ever assembled. From monumental repertory to the American premiere of a major contemporary opera, our 70th Season affirms the Santa Fe Opera’s commitment to artistic ambition while engaging audiences with works that resonate across time and culture. There is truly something for everyone at the Santa Fe Opera — I hope you will join us!”
Individual tickets and subscriptions for both the 2026 and 2027 Seasons are on sale now at santafeopera.org.
NEW IN 2027
Artistic Leadership
The Santa Fe Opera is pleased to announce the extension of Harry Bicket’s contract as Music Director through the 2028 Season. Since his appointment as Chief Conductor in 2013 and subsequent elevation to Music Director in 2018, Bicket has led productions spanning a wide range of repertory, including Pelléas et Mélisande, Così fan tutte, Candide and Alcina. Meya says, “It has been an honor to work with Harry over the past eight years, and I am delighted that he will continue as Music Director through 2028. He has been a defining artistic voice for the Santa Fe Opera, shaping the work of our orchestra and maintaining the highest musical standards. His Pelléas et Mélisande in 2023 remains a particular highlight, reflecting his deep understanding of the relationship between music and drama.”
Maestro Bicket says, “I am thrilled to have been asked to extend my Music Directorship at the Santa Fe Opera, a place that has been so central to my musical life since my debut in 2004. It is a huge privilege to work with my wonderful colleagues in management, the music staff, chorus and especially the extraordinary Santa Fe Opera Orchestra, and I look forward to the coming years of great music making in the High Desert.”
Rounding out the company’s musical leadership, the Santa Fe Opera names Iván López Reynoso as Principal Conductor, beginning in the 2027 Season. Since making his American debut with the Santa Fe Opera in 2022, conducting The Barber of Seville, López Reynoso has developed a strong artistic relationship with the company, returning to conduct La bohème and the first-ever Apprentice Concert with orchestra in 2025.
In his role as Principal Conductor, López Reynoso will collaborate closely with Maestro Bicket and company leadership, conducting selected mainstage productions and contributing to the artistic quality and high musical standards of the Santa Fe Opera. He writes:
“It is with profound excitement and immense emotion that I will join the extraordinary artistic team of the Santa Fe Opera as its Principal Conductor beginning with the 2027 Season. This institution, synonymous with excellence and an international benchmark for quality and professionalism, has left a strong and indelible impression on me since my debut in 2022 with Il barbiere di Siviglia, a memorable production that is still fondly remembered and that I am delighted to conduct again as my first title under this new and honorable responsibility. The unique, magical, and inimitable landscape of this theater ensures that every operatic evening there becomes a complete and unforgettable experience for all of us who have had the privilege to witness it. Also, the special chemistry I have felt with the Santa Fe Opera Orchestra is one of the greatest artistic privileges of my career, and I look forward with great excitement to our future together.”
Bicket concludes, “It gives me enormous pleasure to welcome Iván López Reynoso as Principal Conductor. Iván has made such a strong impression over the last few years, and we are all eager to have him join our team on a more permanent basis.
Together, these appointments reflect the Santa Fe Opera’s continued investment in artistic continuity and the development of a dynamic conducting leadership team. Says Meya: “For 70 Seasons, the Santa Fe Opera continues to bring together extraordinary artists and audiences in a place where opera feels both timeless and newly alive each summer. This anniversary celebrates that spirit with great masterpieces, a major contemporary work making its American premiere, the extension of Harry Bicket’s Musical Directorship, and the appointment of Iván López Reynoso as Principal Conductor, a remarkable artist whose musical leadership will play a significant role in shaping the company’s future. I could not be more excited for what lies ahead.”
Trio of American Premieres: 2026, 2027 and 2028
Continuing its long-standing commitment to innovation and discovery, the Santa Fe Opera will present an extraordinary trio of American premieres over the next three seasons: Lili Elbe (2026) with music by Tobias Picker and libretto by Aryeh Lev Stollman; Of One Blood (2027), with music by Brett Dean and libretto by Heather Betts; and Enemigo del pueblo (2028), with music by Francisco Coll, the only student to date of British composer Thomas Adès, and libretto by Àlex Rigola, based on the play by Henrik Ibsen. One of the world’s most widely performed playwrights, Ibsen reaches his bicentennial in 2028, lending particular resonance to this adaptation.
From its earliest years, the company has distinguished itself as a home for adventurous programming, creating a legacy of 45 American premieres and 19 world premieres, and introducing audiences to bold contemporary voices while expanding the limits of the operatic repertory. Since its earliest seasons, the Santa Fe Opera has presented American premieres of works by Richard Strauss, Igor Stravinsky, Paul Hindemith, Alban Berg, Dmitri Shostakovich, Arnold Schoenberg, Krzysztof Penderecki and Benjamin Britten, among others. Since the turn of the century, notable American premieres have included works by Huang Ruo, Kaija Saariaho, Tan Dun, Thomas Adès and Hans Werner Henze. Notes Meya, “The Santa Fe Opera has always been a home for adventurous programming, where audiences encounter works not yet part of the standard repertory and discover that the future of opera is just as compelling as its past. These three American premieres carry that tradition forward, offering audiences the chance to experience groundbreaking works that engage with compelling stories, diverse perspectives and innovative musical languages.”
THE 2027 SEASON
Turandot
“What is like ice, but burns?” In a mythical past, a decree states that Princess Turandot must ask her suitors three riddles. Those who fail will be executed. Will anyone succeed and melt the Princess’s heart?
The 2027 Season opens with Puccini’s Turandot on July 2. Adapted from a production first developed at the Teatro Petruzzelli in Bari, Italy, the staging is directed by Paul Curran and conducted by John Fiore, with sets by Gary McCann, lighting and projections by Driscoll Otto and costumes by the celebrated Italian couturier Roberto Capucci, whose sculptural designs define the production’s visual identity. The scenic environment creates an abstract, ice-like architectural landscape that mirrors the emotional severity of its heroine and underscores the opera’s exploration of sovereign power and isolation.
In her Santa Fe Opera debut, soprano Angela Meade sings the titular role of Princess Turandot, bringing commanding dramatic authority to one of opera’s most formidable portrayals of mythic power. Tenor Arturo Chacón-Cruz sings Calàf in his company debut, and soprano Kathleen O’Mara, First Prize winner of the 2024 Operalia Competition, makes her company debut as Liù. The principal cast is complete with Peixin Chen as Timur, Thomas Mole as Ping in his company debut, and former Apprentice Singers Terrence Chin-Loy and Spencer Hamlin as Pang and Pong. Susanne Sheston is the Chorus Director.
11 performances are scheduled: July 2, 7, 10, 16, 23; August 2, 7, 11, 20, 24, 28, 2027.

The Barber of Seville
“Figaro, Figaro, FI-GA-RO!” The Count is in love with Rosina, who is being forced to wed old Doctor Bartolo. Can his wily barber Figaro help him get the girl? Power relations get turned upside down in this tunefully hilarious comedy, which returns in a beloved revival.
Opening Weekend continues on July 3 with the revival of Rossini’s The Barber of Seville, directed by Stephen Barlow and conducted by Principal Conductor Iván López Reynoso. First presented by the company in 2022, the production received critical acclaim:
“Barlow engineered a nonstop mix of physical hijinks and on-point confrontations that almost always fit snugly with Rossini’s bubbly music.”
—Harvey Steiman, Seen and Heard International
“All in all, The Barber of Seville is the funniest, wittiest and best-sung comedy here since Laurent Pelly’s Platée in 2007.”
—Mark Tiarks, Santa Fe New Mexican
“This production is a milestone in the history of The Barber of Seville. It will be hard to equal such an amount of talent and creativity, let alone surpass it.”
—Christian Dalzon, Concerto Net
In Stephen Barlow’s clever staging, Seville and Santa Fe meet and merge in a whimsical world where anything can happen. The familiar sunbaked colors of southern Spain meld seamlessly with the Santa Fe Opera’s beloved natural backdrop, and Andrew D. Edwards’s scenic design features a revolving stage that adds a multiplicity of possible locales — including a giant bust of Rossini himself! — to the usual interior and exterior settings of the opera, while his costumes, based on 18th-century period clothing, freely embrace fantasy. Mitchell Harper’s choreography surprises at every turn in this charming production, illuminated by lighting designer Christopher Akerlind.
Following her Santa Fe Opera debut in 2026 as Suzuki, Sun-Ly Pierce sings the role of Rosina. Former Apprentice Singers Jonah Hoskins and Luke Sutliff sing Count Almaviva and Figaro, respectively. Kevin Burdette returns as Bartolo, reprising a performance widely praised for its theatrical precision and physical comedy. William Guanbo Su returns to the Santa Fe Opera as Don Basilio. Susanne Sheston is the Chorus Director.
8 performances are scheduled: July 3, 9, 14; August 3, 9, 14, 19, 27, 2027.

Così fan tutte
How much would you bet on human nature? Set in a casino in 1920s France, Don Alfonso wagers his two young friends that their fiancées will cheat on them by the end of the day. All bets are off in a fresh production of this comedic masterpiece, where speculation — financial and romantic — always entails risk.
At the center of the 2027 Season is a new production of Mozart’s romantic comedy Così fan tutte, opening July 17 — first presented by the company in its inaugural 1957 Season. The production is directed by British opera director Amy Lane, who recently assumed the role of Director of Opera at Opera Australia and previously held the position of Head Staff Director at the Royal Opera and Ballet, and is conducted by German-born conductor Erina Yashima, former First Kapellmeister of the Komische Oper Berlin and Assistant Conductor of the Philadelphia Orchestra. Both make their company debuts.
Scenic and costume designer Emma Ryott sets the action in a 1929 Normandy casino; the staging reimagines the opera’s “wager” as a culture of financial speculation, where the young officers become Wall Street stockbrokers and the “war” that propels the drama is recast as the market crash. Lighting by Charlie Morgan Jones and associate and movement direction by Tim Claydon complete the production’s visual landscape.
Mané Galoyan and Samantha Hankey return to Santa Fe as Fiordiligi and Dorabella, following acclaimed appearances in prior seasons, joined by Giovanni Sala and Justin Austin in their company debuts as the young officers, Ferrando and Guglielmo. Former Apprentice Singers Mattia Venni and Elisa Sunshine sing Don Alfonso and Despina. Susanne Sheston is the Chorus Director.
7 performances are scheduled: July 17, 21, 30; August 5, 10, 21, 25, 2027.

Kátya Kabanová
Desire that is repressed often overflows. Kátya, the young wife of an inattentive husband, can no longer deny her attraction to dashing, romantic Boris. A literal and figurative storm threatens to overwhelm the lovers in a devastating new production.
The festival continues on July 24 with Janáček’s Kátya Kabanová in a new production directed by David Pountney and conducted by Harry Bicket. Pountney returns to Santa Fe following his widely celebrated production of Rusalka (2023), bringing to Janáček’s work a career-long engagement with Czech repertoire and a deep understanding of its linguistic and theatrical nuances.
With scenic design by Leslie Travers, the production centers on a stark wooden house inspired by Shaker architecture, enclosed within a circular landscape suggestive of encroaching mud rather than flowing water, creating a spatial confinement that reflects the oppressive social and communal forces shaping Kátya’s fate. Costumes are by Marie-Jeanne Lecca, and lighting is by Malcolm Rippeth.
Celebrated soprano Ailyn Pérez, whose portrayal of Rusalka under Pountney’s direction was among the most memorable achievements of recent seasons, reunites with the director in the title role. Several in the cast make company debuts: tenor John Findon as Boris Grigorjeviċ; mezzo-soprano Rosie Aldridge as Marfa Kabanová; tenor Ryan Capozzo as Váňa Kudrjaš; mezzo-soprano Emily Sierra as Varvara. The ensemble is complete with Peixin Chen as Dikój and John Daszak as Tichon Kabanov. Susanne Sheston is the Chorus Director.

Of One Blood
Though buried side by side in Westminster Abbey, Elizabeth I and Mary, Queen of Scots — cousins “of one blood” — never met in life. Their intertwined reigns ignited a ruthless clash of faith and power that ended in Mary’s execution by Elizabeth’s command.
The season culminates in the American premiere of Of One Blood, composed by Brett Dean with a libretto by Heather Betts. The work marks the second installment in a series of American premieres at the Santa Fe Opera and is presented as part of an international co-commission and co-production consortium led by the Bavarian State Opera. Of the May 10 world premiere, the Financial Times wrote, “A tale of Elizabethan intrigue makes a thrilling 21st century opera…with a pungent, propulsive score and gutsy singing, this world premiere at the Bayerische Staatsoper deserves to be heard widely.”
Exploring dynastic power, religious division and contested legitimacy through the story of two royal cousins – Mary, Queen of Scots, and Elizabeth I – whose claims to authority are shaped by blood and belief, the work closes the 2027 Season with a contemporary examination of political and spiritual authority.
Directed by Claus Guth, the creative team from the world premiere in Munich returns for the Santa Fe production, with scenic design by Etienne Pluss and costumes by Ursula Kudrna. Michael Bauer provides lighting, with choreography by Sommer Ulrickson.
The cast features former Apprentice Singer Emily Richter as Mary Stuart in her company debut, and soprano Ambur Braid in her company debut as Elizabeth I. Soprano Mirjam Mesak sings Female Consort 2 in her company debut, and Lotte Betts-Dean makes her American debut as Female Consort 3. Several former Apprentice Singers return to the Santa Fe Opera: Gretchen Krupp as Female Consort 5/Jane Kennedy, Spencer Hamlin as Male Consort 1/Lord Darnley and Terrence Chin-Loy as Male Consort 2. Thomas Mole sings Male Consort 4, William Guanbo Su sings Male Consort 5/Executioner and Jory Vinikour is the Harpsichordist. Susanne Sheston is the Chorus Director.
