Meet our new Concertmaster, Steven Moeckel
By Emily Doyle Moore
We are delighted to introduce you to Steven Moeckel, the Santa Fe Opera's new Leonard Schwartz Concertmaster Chair.
For those who may not know, a Concertmaster is the leader of the first violin section in an orchestra and the instrument-playing leader of the orchestra. Steven's appointment was announced in September of 2019 following highly competitive auditions which occurred on-site in August 2019. SFO Music Director Harry Bicket writes, “I believe that Steven will be a worthy successor in the long line of distinguished SFO Concertmasters, and that he has all the qualities necessary to lead the orchestra forward on the next stage of its journey.” . Steven also serves as the Concertmaster of the Phoenix Symphony and has appeared as a soloist with the Phoenix Symphony, Sunriver Music Festival, Xiamen Philharmonic, Phoenix Chamber Orchestra, and Breckenridge Music Festival, among others. He is a graduate of Indiana University and Salzburg’s Hochschule Mozarteum.
In this video, we get to meet Steven at home, hear his Santa Fe Opera audition story, and find out more about his love for music from the very beginning. You can learn more about Steven and stream his beautiful music for free here.
We look forward to sharing additional episodes with you in due course. We plan to also highlight other members of the Santa Fe Opera Orchestra in the months and seasons ahead. Stay tuned!
