TRIBUTE TO SUSAN F. MORRIS
Tonight, we celebrate Board Honorary Chairman Susan F. Morris and her 20 years of exemplary service to the Santa Fe Opera. Susan and her husband Bill began attending performances at the invitation of John Crosby, the founder and General Director of the Santa Fe Opera. As a child, John suffered from asthma. His pediatrician in Bronxville, New York was Susan’s father. It was Susan’s father who recommended that John attend the Los Alamos Ranch School, which was John’s formative introduction to New Mexico. Susan and her husband Bill were longtime subscribers to the Metropolitan Opera, when in the 1990s, they decided to attend the Santa Fe Opera. Knowing the family connection, Bill urged Susan to write a letter to John. John was delighted to hear from her. Soon after her first visit to Santa Fe, Susan joined the Board of Directors. Between 2003-2020, Susan was either President or Chairman of the Board. She served all four General Directors and provided guidance and continuity during leadership transitions. She and Bill have supported every aspect of the opera’s mission, and Susan has led successful fundraising efforts to renovate the theatre, backstage spaces and grounds. Together, Susan and Bill created an endowed fund named for John Crosby to provide production support in perpetuity, and they are members of the Summit Society in recognition of their generous lifetime giving. Susan is highly regarded in the field of opera. She is an emeritus trustee of OPERA America, and is also a recipient of The National Opera Trustee Recognition Award. She is a model of steadfast leadership, known and admired for her intelligence, grace and sense of humor. She is a true champion for the Santa Fe Opera, and we are deeply grateful for her matchless record of service and personal dedication.
